Between November 7th and 9th will be open the Antarctic School Fair (ASF) at the International Antarctic Center of the Empresa Portuaria Austral (Southern Port Company) with delegations from the cities of Santiago, Concepcion, Talcahuano, Curacautin, Valdivia, Osorno, Puerto Montt, Villarrica, La Union, and three representative groups from Punta Arenas. |

The National Service of Tourism, (Sernatur, according to its Spanish acronym) awarded the Regional Distinction to Tourism Merit to Chilean Antarctic Institute (Inach), recognizing its contribution to knowledge, development and tourist promotion of Antarctica and Chilean Patagonia.

The Strategic Council of the Regional Agency of Productive Development, presided by Magallanes’ Intendenta Eugenia Mancilla, and which includes representatives from public and private fields, approved the first program that seeks to improve competitiveness of tourist area, assembling all the services offered on elite tourist, with an investment over 1,600 millions pesos, in a first stage.

Enrique Escobar, head of Austro Chile (Southern Chile) the association of tourism businessmen of Magallanes, expects a good 2008-2009 season, based on “what we feel in the atmosphere and bookings in travel agencies”. Nevertheless, he has some apprehensions because of the world financial crisis. Besides that, “the world tourism organization predicts no more than a 4 to 4.5 per cent increase, since the normal last years has been 7 to 9 per cent”. |

The Navy will intensify navigation control in Antarctic waters due to the start of liners season next November, which will mean a hundred per cent increase of travels to the white continent.
