Ultima Esperanza Governor Maria Isabel Sanchez visited Torres del Paine National Park in order to inspect the reforestation is being made in the place where a fire destroyed, four years ago, about 15 thousand hectares. The fire was caused by a careless Czech tourist, whose government tried to repair the damage, signing an agreement with Chilean government through which 3 to 5 thousand species are being planted each day. The plants are cultivated in greenhouses in Puerto Natales and taken to the park with Czech technology, in places which were woods. |

The Chilean manager of Uruguayan Pluna Airlines, Eugenio Cox, informed people from the aeronautical authorities are in Uruguay examining pilots and flight crew in order to validate their licenses so they may flight in Chile. After that, Pluna Airlines could start flying to Punta Arenas, as a cargo airline, but probable with passengers too. Regional secretary of Transport Gustavo Faraldo said that is good news for Magallanes. At present two airlines operate between Punta Arenas and Santiago, LAN and Sky. A third one, Air Comet, closed a few months ago.

Methanex Company presented its project of a wind park in Cabo Negro, according to Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) of United Nations, under Kyoto Protocol which demands a referendum plebiscite.
The CDM is a measure created by Kyoto Protocol in order to help developed countries to fulfill its commitments of reducing the emissions of its greenhouse gases through friendly environmental projects. At the same time they help sustainable of underdeveloped countries obtaining Certificates of Emission Reductions, each one equivalent to a ton of CO2.

The 16th meeting of the Interparliamentary Chilean-Argentinean Group agreed to compose a work team to promote legal measures, road and regulations in order to contribute to speed free movement of traffic at the border crossings of both countries. The meeting, with a numerous Argentinean legislators headed by representative Amanda Susana Genem, was presided over by Carlos Bianchi, Chilean Senate vice-president.

Chilean and Argentinean Navies got together organizing a continental sea race, to commemorate their firsts National Government Juntas, which gave way to their independence, in 1810. Both Navies invited 24 countries to join this race, half of them committed to participate until now.
Brigs, frigates, corvettes and schooners from different countries, with civilian and military navigators will sail the South America seas on an adventure starting in February in Rio de Janeiro. The sailing will keep on by Mar del Plata, Montevideo, Isla de los Estados, Ushuaia and entering Chilean territory on March 23rd by Cape Horn, arriving to Punta Arenas on March 27th, where the sailboats will stay for four days, sailing afterwards to Talcahuano, Valparaiso, Callao, Guayaquil, Cartagena de Indias, Santo Domingo and ending in Veracruz.

A thirty minutes display of fireworks –at the Strait of Magellan promenade- was the finishing touch of the Patagonia 2009 Winter Season that for almost a month offered the Municipality of Punta Arenas as its main tourism attraction. Before the fireworks festival, two days of carnival gathered more then 25,000 people who watched allegorical wagons, street musicians and adults and children in fancy dresses.

The first mountain bike race “From beach to hill” took place in Punta Arenas with this city, Puerto Natales and Argentinean Río Gallegos took place here.
The race is also called “0 to 358”, since it starts in Avenida Independencia, 0 meters above the sea level, to the finishing line, the Club Andino, 358 meters above sea level, and it was one of the activities which opened the official ski season on Mirador hill.
