GEOSITES, WHAT IS NEW IN TOURISM
cueva_del_milodonThe National Tourism Service (Sernatur), National Oil Company (Enap) and Chilean Antarctic Institute (Inach) signed an agreement to create a tourism-scientific circuit with geological information on Magallanes landscape milestones, international recognized, presented on bilingual signs named Geosites, using resources, knowledge and professionals for that purpose.

The study, design and construction of 10 geosites, distributed in 16 signs in Punta Arenas, San Gregorio, Torres del Paine, Río Verde and Laguna Blanca, aims to transmit geological information among tourists and national and international community on the most relevant landmarks national and tourism of southern Patagonia geography.

In two years work were research, designed and identified 10 geosites: Strait of Magellan, Fort Bulnes, San Isidro Lighthouse, Drumlins, Skyring and Otway sounds, Morro Chico, Pali Aike, Cave of Milodon, Sarmiento and Amarga lakes and Torres del Paine. In each of these geosites, with an original design and signs of stainless steel, is explained the history and geological formation of the place and other subjects of general interest and tourism importance.

With the information gathered to identify the geosites, it was also created an educational and interactive web site, with a detailed description of all the circuit sites. The web address is www.geositiosmagallanes.cl.
