Safely arrived to Fildes bay Chilean Navy tug “Lautaro”, towing Brazilian yacht “Mar Sem Fim” which was without propulsion and without government at Drake Sea, some 165 miles from Fildes bay, in the Chilean Antarctic Territory.
The yacht reported the emergency on December 23rd and the Third Naval Zone ordered the “Lautaro” to weigh anchor. The ship was on Chile bay, as a service ship of the Combined Antarctic Naval Patrol (PANC in Spanish) which is carried out along with the Argentinean Navy. PANC assures the presence of a naval mean in case of maritime emergencies on the White Continent, complying with the requirements of search and rescue and environment protection responsibilities of our country in the area, like some days ago when the Navy unit gave help on a hydrocarbon spill in Fildes bay.
The “Lautaro” arrived at 7 o’clock on December 24th at the side of the yacht on emergency and after checking the seven people crew was in good health, towed it away to Fildes bay, arriving on December 25th. |
