RESEARCH ON EXTINCTION OF ARTIC BEACH
PLAYERO-ARTICOCanadian research Guy Morrison (National Wildlife Research Center Environment) who is making air census of migratory beach birds at the length and breadth of the Americas since the eighties, arrived to Bahia Lomas to investigate the reasons of the extinction of the specie Calidris canutus rufa, commonly named in Chile as "Artic beach".

Bahia Lomas is located ate the east mouth of the Strait of Magellan, north coast of Tierra del Fuego, Primavera municipality, and it's the main winter season of the Artic Beach in South America, sheltering more than 80 per cent of its population.. That's why this wet area has been designed Ramsar site in 2004 and Hemispheric Reserve for Beach Birds in 2009.

Morrison, one of Hemispheric Net of Beach Birds Reserve (HNBBR) is a current leader of flight reconnaissance in winter places of the hemispheric population is worried about its decline and his research is a key to understand the diminishing of this specie and obtain enough information to its recover and preservation.

Given the importance of this research and according to its Rational Use of Wetland Program, Enap Magallanes provided a helicopter for Morrison air reconnaissance on Bahia Lomas area, accompanied by local research Ricardo Matus.
