NO EARTHQUAKES IN MAGALLANES

magall

Seismic situation in Magallanes is quite peculiar, said Mario Pardo, Universidad de Chile doctor in seismology, when asked why earthquakes suffered by several areas of Chile are not appreciable in this region.

Scientist explained earthquakes in Chile are due to a friction movement of Nazca and South American plaques, which produce earthquakes when it adjusts one over the other.

?

Pardo said at the extreme of Chile there are three plaques, the South American, the Antarctic and the Scotia, which act by sliding and not by friction. Although this difference doesn’t keep the area exempt of some telluric movement, these are not perceptible in Punta Arenas, Puerto Natales, Torres del Paine or Tierra del Fuego, because the sliding happens very far away and in inhabited places.

The recent cataclysm which caused a great deal of destruction at the north-center area of the country, had no effect on Magallanes, 3 thousand kilometers away.
