SPECTACULAR FINDING OF ICHTIOSAURUS IN TORRES DEL PAINE
Ictio_CSalazarThe vertebrate paleontological excavation most important done in Chileclosed its 2010 field work with the study of full ichtiosaur baby and acomplete fin of the same specie; a research travel to Grey glacier area, and training to park rangers, said geologist Christian Salazar.

For justifying his sayings, Salazar mentions these are the first fossilsfindings of complete vertebrates from the time of dinosaurs. “Before thisonly fragments or bones groups have been found, but never completeindividuals and in such amount, 34 ichtiosaurs up to now”, specified thegeologist from University of Concepcion, who currently is ending itsdoctorate degree at University of Heidelberg.

As already has been reported, the field campaign done in Tyndall glacierlasted 20 days. Although the climate conditions weren’t the best the firstdays since the area was affected by persistent rains an even snow, scientists made three important findings in the area: an ichtiosaur withtwo embryos inside (at first they thought it was only one), remains ofmarrow (soft tissue, something absolutely unusual in the world) and anichtiosaur from the Jurassic period (199 to 145 million years ago), thatis to say older than all the others of the area.
