JAPANESE SCIENTIS IN ANTARCTIC EXPEDITION
japoneses patagonia punta arenas chileSix Japanese scientists are taking part in the fortieth seventh Antarctic Scientific Expedition organized by the Chilean Antarctic Institute, who travelled by air to the white continent to start the second stage of this expedition, centered on maritime investigation.


This is the first time Japanese ask Chilean support to develop a project to study Antarctica, which opens the possibility of starting a cooperation relationship with Japan universities and institutes to strengthenformation and specializations of Chilean scientists, in opinion of Javier Arata, head of Projects Department of the Chilean Antarctic Institute.Minoru Funaki, scientist of the Japan National Polar Institute explained this is the biggest group coming from his country to take part on an expedition like this one.

The project to be developed, said Funaki, is thestudy of tectonics of the Strait of Bransfield, located between South Shetland islands, by the north, and Antarctic peninsula by the south.

One of the pines of work of Japanese consists of a research of geomagnetism of that area, to do which they are going to use an unmanned plane maneuvered by remote control. The plane is 3 meters wide and can flythe equivalent of a 500 kilometers range..
