Canal interocéanico que se prolonga de oriente a poniente a través de 583 kms. de longitud y un ancho de 3 kms., en su parte más angosta, de 35 a 40 kms. en otras. Sus mayores atractivos lo constituyen la posición geográfica que le otorga una posición estratégica, respecto de su uso como ruta transoceánica para el transporte marítimo internacional, como también su trascendencia histórica y fauna marina que se puede observar.
STRAIT OF MAGELLAN
The Strait of Magellan is the sea channel that curves from east to west between the Atlantic and Pacific oceans. It is 583 kms. long, and its width varies from 3 kms. at its narrowest point to 35 or 40 kms at its widest. This strait gained importance because of its strategic location as an intemational shipping route. Today, its importance also lies in its history and marine life.
PUNTA DUNGENES
Ultimo punto de Chile continenal hacia el oriente. Aquí se fundó la primera ciudad en el Estrecho de Magallanes llamada "Nombre de Jesús". Hay un viejo faro, famoso para todos los marinos del mundo, además de un Cementerio de Fareros. Punta Dúngenes está a la entrada oriental del Estrecho de Magallanes. Se ubica aproximadamente a 272 kms. al noreste de Punta Arenas, y se accede a través de una bifurcación de la ruta internacional 255. En el kilómetro 152 de esta ruta se toma el desvío hacia Punta Dúngenes.
PUNTA DUNGENESS
The easternmost point of Chile, Punta Dungeness is at the eastern entrance of the Strait of Magellan. The first city in the Strait of Magellan, Nombre de Jesús, was founded here by the Spanish colonizers. There also is an old lighthouse, renowned among sailors all over the world, and a Cementerio de Fareros (Lighthouse Keepers Cemetery). Punta Dungeness is located about 272 kms. northeast of Punta Arenas. Travel on International Route 255 to the fork at kilometer 152, then take the road heading east towards Punta Dungeness.
