ISLA MAGDALENALa isla, en cuya extremidad noroeste posee un faro, es junto al islote Marta, un reducto natural de pingüinos, cormoranes, otras aves y lobos marinos. Ambas islas forman el Monumento Natural "Los Pingüinos", que se encuentra situado a 25 millas náuticas al norte de Punta Arenas. Se estima que la población de pingüinos alcanza, aproximadamente, a unas 50.000 parejas de la especie magallánica. A medida que el barco se aleja de Punta Arenas, se observará en la costa oeste el sector de Tres Puentes, el pueblo de Río Seco y otros caseríos del litoral. Más lejos se destacarán centros industriales y de explotación petrolífera como Bahía Laredo y Cabo Negro. Hacia el este, la costa de Tierra del Fuego, de relieve llano, se vislumbra a la distancia. Frente a la Isla Magdalena se verá la profunda Bahía Gente Grande, nombre que recuerda la estatura de los indios onas y que le diera al lugar el explorador Sarmiento de Gamboa, hace 4 siglos.

MAGDALENA ISLANDThis island and its neighboring islet Marta is home to tens of thousands of Magellanic Penguins, cormorants, other birds and sea lions. Both islands make up the Monumento Natural Los Pingüinos (The Penguins Natural Monument), located 25 nautical miles north of Punta Arenas. The estimated population of the penguins on these two islands is more than 50,000 penguin pairs. The boat trip to Isla Madgdalena offers contrasting views to the west and east of the Strait. On the west coast can be seen the Tres Puentes area, the village of Río Seco and other small settlements along the shore. Industrial centers and oil production centers can be seen in the distance, such as Bahia Laredo and Cabo Negro. Toward the east, the coast of Tierra del Fuego looms flat and long. In front of Isla Magdalena can be seen the deep Bahía Gente Grande (Large People Bay), a name that was given to this bay by Pedro Sarmiento de Gamboa four centuries ago because of the tall stature of the indigenous Ona tribe.
SENO OTWAYA 65 km. al norte de Punta Arenas, en el seno Otway al norponiente de la Península Brunswick. Entre los meses de octubre a Marzo, año tras año se reúnen los pingüinos magallánicos para abocarse a la tarea de crear nueva vida. En el lugar usted deberá desplazarse caminando por la costa aproximadamente dos kilómetros para encontrar un museo natural al aire libre. En el cual desde corta distancia podrá observar y admirar a estas simpáticas e indefensas aves las cuales le deleitarán con un espectáculo de vida.
OTWAY INLETThe penguin colony is located 65 kilometers north of Punta Arenas on Seno Otway (Otway Inlet), along the northwest of the Brunswick Peninsula. The Magellanic Penguins return annually to this spot between October and March to lay eggs and raise their young. At the site, you will walk approximately two kilometers to the middle of a natural reserve filled with penguin burrows to see the comic antics of these delightful and defenseless creatures at close range.
