Happenings in Febuary 2007 !
I am back in Punta Arenas, working with the doggies. Some things are getting better, others worse.
Senora Elia Tagle has bought a new piece of land north of the City and we will be moving operations there in April 2007. If things look a little run down, it is because of limited finances to both maintain our current site as well as build a new site.
Some of the new and current neigbors are complaining. The streets are still filled with too many dogs. 15,000 and climbing. Soon the government will do a roundup, put them all to sleep and the process will start all over again. Long term solutions exist and we have been pushing them but the government, local and national still fails to fund them. Education and sterilization are two such that we have pushed since our inception.
Many of these street dogs are owned, many are stray. Surprisingly many are healthy as they eat the food garbage and people do feed them. Though this is not the solution to the problem. We have advanced very little in terms of sterization of male and female dogs. This is expensive here and funds are limited. Our 2006 budget was less then $20,000! More later......
