Punta Arenas

OUR SHELTER

Over 1000 miles south of Santiago, Punta Arenas is the capital of Chilean Patagonia. This beautiful port city sits along the historic Straights of Magallan. While the human population is only around 140,000 people, the street dog population is said to be as high as 20,000. In Chile, the government does not regularly provide animal control services. It left to the individuals or private organizations. Local City government has been looking to address this issue for some time and has provided limited finacial support to our organization.

In our shelter on the edge of Punta Arenas, we care for abandoned dogs and cats. Here they have food, friends and shelter until we hopefully find a home.

The terrain we currently rent is without a lease and we are in danger of being evicted. Here we work with three employees and volunteers. Operating cost run around $1200 a month. These are covered by our member or socios, funding campagnes, bingo, raffles and tag sales. Also we receive donationse from companies and a little bit of help from the city.

Like always, too many animals and lack of $$ is a big problem and we are always interested in help in the form of volunteers, donations and vet care. If you are interested in helping us, drop an email to perros@chileaustral.com or bdwillet@n2.net
