Pequeña ciudad de aproximadamente 6.400
habitantes, en su mayoría descendientes de los primeros yugoeslavos
que llegaron a la isla, a fines del siglo pasado, para la extracción
del oro. Cuenta con hoteles, restaurantes, servicios públicos.
La Isla de Tierra del Fuego fue descubierta
por Hernando de Magallanes, quien le dio este nombre debido a las
fogatas de los indios onas que iluminaban sus riberas. Puede recorrerse
las plantas petrolíferas de la Empresa Nacional del Petróleo (ENAP),
realizar excursiones de pesca y visitar estancias ganaderas.
This small city has 6.400 inhabitant.
The majority are descendants of Yugoslavian settlers who came to
the island at the end of the last century to prospect for gold.
Porvenir has hotels, restaurants and public services.
The island was discovered by Ferdinand
Magellan, who called it Tierra del Fuego (Land of Fire) becauseof
the huge bonfires that the Ona indians built on its shore. It is
possible to travel around the island and see the petroleum processing
plants of the Empresa Nacional del Petróleo (ENAP, the National
Petrouleum Company), visit sheep ranches, and go fishing.
