This national park is the major tourist attraction in the region. It
covers 180,000 hectares on the Seno de Ultima Esperanza. The Park is
located 150 kms. from Puerto Natales and 400 kms. from Punta
Arenas.
There are many hiking paths that cross widely differing types of terrain,
such as pampas and thick Magellanic forests, and run along lakes
with huge glaciers and icebergs. The park is surrounded by huge,
craggy mountains, including the famous Cuernos del Paine (Paine Horns).
One of the most interesting excursions is to walk along LAGO GREY
to the GLACIAR GREY. Along the way huge icebergs that have broken
off of the glacier can be seen floating in the lake, pushed by the wind.
The area of the park can be reached by a road on the south side of . This
road leads to the (Bull Mountains), where there is a good view of the
Paine Massif, Monte Balmaceda and the lakes, rivers and plains spread
out below. There are cabins and campsites in this area of the park.
Among other routes that can be taken is the road to LAGUNA AMARGA (Bitter
Lake) and , which follows a mountainous area peppered with little
lakes that runs between NORDENSKJOLD to the north to the Sarmiento
to the south.
It is possible to hike to LAGO PAINE and to continue into the wide
valley that ends with GLACIAR DICKSON. From this glacier the northerly
slopes of the Paine chain can be seen. One of these peaks is topped by
a black, carggy rock in the shape of a Tehuelche Indian face. The facial
profile can be made out, complete with the traditional headband that the
Tehuelches wear for restraining their horses. The headband is decorated
with snowdrifts even in summer.
There are many other hikes in the park, with the most famous being the
weeklong circuit around the Paine Massif. On this circuit it is
necessary to camp or stay in the various refugios (shelters) along the
way.
Pumas, guanacos, foxes, hares, woodpeckers, condors and native birds
such as the aguilucho and the rare martin pescador abound in the park. |
